Queen Yaa Asantewaa was born around the year 1840 into a family of traditional rulers in the Ashanti Kingdom of present-day Ghana.

She was a brave Ghanaian warrior queen who rose up to lead an army against the invading British.

Asantewaa's story of bravery and courage in the face of danger is a major part of Ghana's history today.
Queen Asantewaa is known for this famous quote:

"Is it true that the bravery of the Ashanti is no more? I cannot believe it. It cannot be! I must say this, if you the men of Ashanti will not go forward, then we will. We the women will. I shall call upon my fellow women. We will fight the white men. We will fight till the last of us falls in the battlefields."
